PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Administrative EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
The Office Technology program is designed to provide students for entry level employment in public and private businesses and professional offices as office and administrative support specialists. To meet this objective, graduates will demonstrate practical business and legal procedures enabling them to function effectively in a computerized office environment utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, graphics, and windows-based applications software.
Legal LEGAL ASSISTANT
A Legal Administrative Assistant is a professional who is trained to handle certain law related responsibilities as an integral member of a legal staff. Properly trained assistants may, under the supervision of a lawyer, perform a variety of functions which include managing complex files, developing legal practice systems, and assisting the attorney in and out of the courtroom.

EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

CA 200 Advanced Computer Applications
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course focuses on the advanced features of software applications and requires students to create a portfolio of completed projects. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) design, format, and prepare various office-related documents; 2) share information among word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics software; and 3) prepare error-free documents that meet specified deadlines.

EN 109 English
(Theory Hours 40, Lab Hours 20, Total Credit Hours 5)
This course focuses on a review of the fundamentals of the English language. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: (write sentences, paragraphs, and essays using correct grammar and punctuation; 2) list the parts of speech; and 3) spell and define troublesome words.

KB 190 Keyboarding I
(Theory Hours 35, Lab Hours 25, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course provides thorough training in the touch system of the keyboard. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) operate the keyboard and basic service keys by touch; 2) use correct key strokes; and 3) key 45 gross words per minute with no errors.

KB 200 Keyboarding II
(Theory Hours 25, Lab Hours 35, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course develops high-speed techniques with emphasis on accuracy. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) use correct key strokes and 2) key 65 net words per minute.

LD 100 Legal Document Production I
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Quarter Credit Hours)
This course focuses on the preparation of various legal documents and the processes for filing and notarizing. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) draft pleadings, motions, and discovery documents from dictation and from form documents; 2) compose and modify common letters associated with filing, serving and transmitting legal documents; and 3) use internet research to gain access to various Texas family law statutes.

LE 101 Business and Legal Ethics
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 00, Total Credit Hours 2)
This course focuses on the development of a moral frame of reference, a discussion of ethical issues, the need for an awareness of social justice in management practices and business activities, the professional obligations to both the law firm and the client, and the difference between malpractice and grievances. Additional topics covered include client confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and the elements of the NALS code of ethics. The course culminates with the obligations and requirements of a Notary Public.

LP 101 Legal Practice I
(Theory Hours 40, Lab Hours 20, Quarter Credit Hours 5)
This course focuses on the processes involved in setting depositions, trial preparation, and coordination with opposing attorneys and court clerks. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) define legal terminology used in real estate transactions, negligence actions, copyright matters, and bankruptcy proceedings; 2) use real estate transaction legal documents; 3) use the basic legal documents in civil litigation; and 4) list various torts.

MA 100 Business Mathematics
(Theory Hours 35, Lab Hours 25, Total Credit Hours 3)
This course focuses on a review of basic mathematical operations and accounts payable and accounts receivable instruction. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) perform mathematical functions with whole nurobers, decimal numbers, and fractions; 2) use QuickBooks software to manage and reconcile a bank account and complete basic tax reporting forms; and 3) use a keypad for numerical entries.

MT 200 Machine Transcription
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course is designed to develop speed and accuracy when transcribing documents. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) operate transcription equipment; 2) transcribe business letters and multiple-page correspondence using mailability standards;
3) detect language and content errors and transcribe text correctly; and 4) proofread and edit handwritten copy.

OC 120 Oral Communications
(Theory Hours 30, La Hours 00, Quarter Credit Hours 3)
This course focuses on the theories and practices of communication in interpersonal, small group, and public speech. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) phrase messages so they are perceived as appropriate for a situation; 2) prepare a resume and a cover letter that will expand ones chances to be chosen for a job interview; 3) follow up a job interview; 4) produce a well-written speech outline; 5) prepare and use speaking notes; and 6) give a persuasive speech.

OP 100 Office Systems & Procedures
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course emphasizes the development of an efficient and effective team player in the workplace. Upon completion of this subject, student will be able to: 1) open and maintain a variety of files; 2) maintain docket systems; 3) list office telephone etiquette rules; and 4) use the internet to conduct common office-related searches.

OP 200 Advanced Office Systems & Procedures
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course focuses on the advanced concepts of project management and office procedures utilizing integration of previously-learned office skills. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) produce a formal report with graphics using appropriate style and placement;
2) process outgoing and incoming mail; 3) troubleshoot software problems; 4) make domestic and international travel arrangements; and 4) prepare and deliver a presentation using visuals.

PD 106 Professional Development
(Theory Hours 30, Lab Hours 00, Quarter Credit Hours 3)
This course prepares the graduating student for gaining employment by emphasizing communication, group dynamics, business ethics, wardrobe, and a positive attitude. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) explain the importance of good employer/employee relations; 2) prepare a cover letter and a resunme; 3) describe appropriate job interview techniques; and 4) identify appropriate dress in the workplace.

SB 100 Spreadsheets & Billing

(Theory Hours 15, Lab Hours 25, Total Credit Hours 2)
Students will learn an introduction to Excel and Quattro Pro, emphasizing the similarities and compatibility between the two programs' functions and the ease of conversion. The course includes the use of Timeslips software billing program for law offices.

(Theory Hours 45, Lab Hours 15, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course focuses on grammar and punctuation and their correct usage in various business documents. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) compose simple and standard letters; 2) edit bnsiness letters; and 3) transmit letters by email including adding attachments.

WP 100 Word Processing I
(Theory Hours 45, Lab Hours 15, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course introduces students to the use of the most popular word processing software applications. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) insert, delete, move, copy, and replace text; 2) save files, open files, and print text; 3) produce various office documents; and 4) use software to improve productivity and avoid repetitious activities.

WP 200 Word Processing II
(Theory Hours 30, Lab Hours 30, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course focuses on word processing concepts such as merging files and using word processing software applications for appointment scheduling and docket control. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) enhance text; 2) mail merge; 3) format documents using indenting outlining, bullets, and numbering; 4) manage files; 5) create tables; 6) sort; and 7) use software for scheduling appointments and docket control.

WP220 Word Processing III
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Quarter Credit Hours 4)
This course focuses on in-depth coverage of desktop publishing terminology, text editing, and use of design principles to create publishing material using word processing desktop publishing features. Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1) plan and design a publication; 2) format a text box; 3) rotate art; 4) work with multiple pages; 5) wrap text around an object; 6) embed and link objects.

LEGAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTMA 100 Business Mathematics
(Theory Hours 35, Lab Hours 25, Quarter Credit Hours 3
This course teaches the student mathematics as needed in the legal office practice. The course begins with a review of the basic mathematics operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.). The student will learn accounts payable and accounts receivable instruction.

CR 100 Court Rules & Procedures
(Theory Hours 30, Lab Hours 30, Total Credit Hours 4)
This course is an introduction to Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and the local District Court Rules for Travis, Hays, and Williamson Counties. The student will learn Texas rules governing filing and serving of legal documents, preparation of discovery documents, and filing and evidence deadlines created by the rules. The student will learn local rules governing docket announcements, deadlines affecting filing of documents, and methods and times for setting hearings and trials. The student will learn pretrial procedures governed by local rules.

EN 109 English
(Theory Hours 40, Lab Hours 20, Total Credit Hours 5)
This course is a review of the fundamentals of the English language. The student will learn writing and correcting sentence and paragraph structure.

KB 190 Keyboarding I
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Total Credit Hours 4)
The student will learn mastery of the keyboard, letterforms, and basic report forms are covered. Emphasis will be placed on accuracy and speed building. The reconnnended proficiency speed is 45 net words per minute.
Prerequisite - None

KB 200 Keyboarding 11
(Theory Hours 25, Lab Hours 35, Total Credit Hours 4)
The course gives the student practice to achieve or maintain the recommended proficiency speed of 65 net words per minute. The students are encouraged to achieve a goal of at least 80 words per minute.

The student will continue to learn document preparation in the following areas of law; Torts, Criminal Law and Procedures, Real Estate, Estate Planning, Estates, and Guardianship, and Bankruptcy. The student will continue the practice of the composition of more advanced documents and letters.

LR 100 Legal Research
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Total Credit Hours 4)
The student will learn fundamentals of Uniform System of Citation, research tools involviog Texas and Federal statutes, and to use the Texas Digest 2d to find cases in Texas SW, SW2d, and SW3d series of case law. The student will learn the fundamentals of shepardizing and writ history as well an overview of online research tools i.e. Westlaw and LexislNexis.

OP 100 Office Systems & Procedures
(Theory Hours 20, Lab Hours 40, Total Credit Hours 4)
The student will learn the aspects of opening new files, including conflicts check, file and subfile creation, creation and use of new client information sheets, and the differences between alphabetical and alpha-numeric filing systems. The course is an introduction to tickler/docket management systems, calendaring of incoming mail, and maintenance of master and personal calendars. The course is an overview of automated software docket systems, telephone etiquette skills, and how to use the Internet’s common search engines.

The student learns advanced concepts such as merging files, and office procedures generally used in law offices. The course begins with an examination of the filing systems and progresses to the procedures used to ensure that information is properly recorded and safeguarded. Special emphasis is placed on procedures to limit exposure to malpractice concerns. The course also teaches the student how to use word processing software applications for appointment scheduling and docket control.

TRAINING AIDS
Computer aided instruction and current software for legal and business applications are accessible to all students.

LEARNING RESOURSES
The school has Learning Resource Centers located throughout the school which contain reference manuals, materials, publications and periodicals. The Resource Centers are available to provide reference material required both in the program and for self-initiated study.

CLASS SIZES
The teacher/student ratio will be a maximum of 30 students to 1 instructor in a lecture class, 20 students to 1 instructor in a typing lab, and a maximum ratio of 20 students to 1 instructor in a computer lab class.
